The topics below are related to European issues, which are of concern to companies producing or using lime. EuLA has built up a competence in each of those fields and provides its members with both technical and scientific assistance. At the same time it acts as the industry spokesperson vis-à-vis the European institutions and ensures coordinated input.
CO2 Emission Trading Scheme (ETS)
Since 2005 the EU has had a cap-and-trade system for CO2 allowances. The European lime sector falls within the scope of the CO2 Emissions Trading Directive. (read more)

Natura 2000
The Habitats Directive has led to the setting up of a network of Special Areas of Conservation that, together with the existing Special Protection Areas, form a network of protected sites across the European Union, called Natura 2000. (read more)
Life Cycle thinking has become a central pillar in environmental policies and sustainable business decision-making. In this context, EuLA commissioned a 'cradle to gate' Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) for quicklime and hydrated lime to provide valuable and reliable data to downstream users who wish to carry out LCAs of their products.

Global demand for raw materials is rising, in particular in emerging economies. Commodity prices skyrocketed in 2008. In this context the security of access to primary and secondary non-energy raw materials gained an unprecedented political interest. (read more)
REACH (Registration Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals).
The REACH Regulation entered into force within the EU on 1 June 2007. The regulation requires that any company manufacturing or importing a chemical substance in quantities of more than one tonne per year is required to register the substance in a central database. (read more)
