Limestone is a naturally occurring material that represents approx. 5% of the Earth surface. Industrially exploitable deposits are characterised by the purity of the carbonate and thickness of the deposit. Therefore, any potential mining site is explored thoroughly in advance. Its viability and environmental impact are carefully assessed before opening a new quarry and its future rehabilitation is already planned.
Limestone is usually extracted in open pits and processed locally. Besides unburnt products - sand, gravel, aggregates or lumps of limestone – the main products are lime and hydrated lime. Industrial customers are supplied by rail, waterway or road.
Lime production facilities have an operational life cycle which can last several generations. Therefore they have a close relationship with the local community.
