Lime - the multifunctional substance

Multiple properties - manifold uses

Lime is one of those usually unseen products that have a profound effect on our daily lives. It is used in many important industrial processes including steel manufacturing, building/construction, food industry, agriculture and many environmental applications to name just a few. Lime is everywhere and can not be missed in our life.

Lime products are

  • Calcium oxide (quick lime, burnt lime)
  • Calcium magnesium oxide (burnt dolomitic lime, dolomitic quick lime)
  • Calcium hydroxide (slaked lime, hydrated lime)
  • Calcium magnesium hydroxide (hydrated dolime, hydrated dolomitic lime)
  • milk of lime / dolime ( a suspension of lime products in water)

Hydrated lime results from the reaction of quick lime with water; the lime is "slaked". This chemical procedure of the hydration releases energy which produces heat. With the slaking of only 100 g calcium oxide, sufficient heat is generated to warm up a litre of water to +/- 25°C.
